Description

Baja Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is an annual international design competition, where university students design, build and compete off-road vehicles.

Students are able to go through the entire engineering design process, prototyping, and testing their off road buggies. This testing is used to revise the design in all aspects to build the most competitive vehicle and then travel to different locations across the United States for the events.

Events range from maneuverability, 200-foot sled pull, obstacle course, acceleration, suspension testing, and the final culminating event consisting of a 4 hour endurance race.

Students are able and required to document each step of their progress, with several design presentations, cost analysis, sales reports and presentations to academic counselors, SAE competition staff and industry professionals. For the students representing the University of San Diego’s Torero Racing program, this competition is the opportunity to put into practice the years of academic learning in the various fields of engineering to come together and perform to our best in competitions with other schools across the nation.

The Torero racing also serves as an opportunity to inspire sophomores and juniors to learn more about the competition through the USD Baja SAE Club, where they can assist in various projects along the way and serve as passing on of the knowledge and skills learned at the University of San Diego. This legacy goes further in creating a community of USD Baja Torero Racing alumni who will be a wealth of knowledge and resources for future generations of engineering students.

Donations are applied to...

Donations will be applied to purchasing materials, conducting real world testing of the vehicle prototypes along the engineering design process, fund the transportation of the vehicle and students to the locations for the competitions, allowing the team gain invaluable experience in the efforts to meet their goals while complying with the rules and regulations of the Baja SAE competitions. Donations will help toward these goals, whether financial, in-kind or materials, are tax deductible.

Personal Message

Thank you! Thank you very much for your contribution in supporting the USD Torero Racing senior team to gain invaluable experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity to design a vehicle from the ground up and compete in the Baja SAE competition. Without this kind of support, the team’s design would remain in the theoretical world without any actual real-world experience.
-Tracy Johnston, 2023 Torero Racing Project Team Leader

Why are donations necessary?

Without contributions from individuals and industry sponsors, the Torero Racing team’s design would not have been possible. Funds are required for the materials, testing, transportation, and competition fees. We are able to be innovative and design components at the limits of our current knowledge and skill level and create what we believe will be the highest performing vehicle at this year’s competitions. Without contributions, the Torero Racing team would effectively not be able to experience this unique opportunity of hands-on skill development, creative thinking, and networking in the industry of Automotive Engineering.
